1959 Plymouth Fury Custom Two-Door Hardtop

Right out of the
factory, Plymouth’s 1959 Fury was radical. Those Virgil Exner fins just
reached for the sky and that’s before famed California custom car
builder Richard Zocchi got his hands on this original 45,000 mile Fury.
About the only thing that hasn’t changed is the stock 318 cubic inch V-8
and Torqueflite automatic transmission.
First, the top was chopped two inches by John Aiello of Marco’s Lucky 7 Customs of Antioch, California. The rear window was retained by insetting it into the back cowl section. Extensively modified, the nose was fitted with a 1957 Buick grill surrounded by a 1957 Chevy bumper widened by four inches, while the Frenched headlights are from a 1960 Buick. The hood’s corners were rounded and it was extended down to meet the grill and fitted with a hood scoop.
All the lower body work modifications were performed by Frank DeRosa & Son of Pittsburg, California. The four wheel well openings were reworked and flared, as were the lower rocker panels. Door and trunk handles were removed and replaced with Unkl Al’s remote entry system. Rear bumper and lower panels were fabricated from 1960 Buick parts. The rear bar taillights started out from a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker, but were stretched six inches and the lenses were made up from a 1950 Ford. Those fabulous rear fins were extended and lengthened all the way to the front doors.
Beautifully sprayed by the legendary Art Himsl of Concord, California, the custom-mixed chartreuse and off-white paint features some red pearl on top and a light twinkle of glitter. The side-spear was painted to resemble the trim on a 1957 DeSoto.
Bill and Tom Fraser of Antioch Muffler fitted the front AMC disc brakes on drop spindles. Out back, Greg Westbury of Concord installed the air bag suspension by air Ride Technology. Wheels are 15-inch chrome Colorado Custom Segundos mounted with 195 R-75 X 15 Diamondback Classic radials. Meanwhile, the glorious pain is set off by chrome and stainless trim prepared by Sherm’s Custom Plating in Sacramento.
Starting with white vinyl and chartreuse piping, the entire interior, including the bucket seats, trunk and hand-made headliner, console and rear seats were constructed and upholstered by Bob Divine of Martinez, California. Sound come courtesy of a Pioneer stereo cassette system.
This fabulous Fury debuted at the Grand National Roadster Show in San Mateo, and at the Sacramento Autorama it was awarded the Sam Barris Memorial Award for Excellence in Paint and Body Work. At the Good Guys in Pleasanton, it made the Top 5 Picks; at the Oakland Rod & Custom Show it garnered “Best Paint,” and at Paso Robles it won “Best Interior.” Now’s your chance to make this Fury the best car in your garage.
