Richard Zocchi Custom: 1956 Chrysler Windsor

Stunning Richard Zocchi Custom: 1956 Chrysler Windsor

This 1956 Chrysler Windsor (chassis W5675101) is a spectacular custom designed and executed by a three-man team of customizing legends including two Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame members. Built in the 1990’s and the feature of many magazine covers as well as a multiple best of show winner, the seller notes an exhaustive list of custom work incorporating everything from modified period Thunderbird, Olds, Cadillac and Mercury parts to a radical, nearly four-inch chop. Power still comes from the original 331 hemi/push-buttonTorqueFlite combo, and remarkably the car is said to have just ~37k original miles. Find it here on eBay in Costa Mesa, California for $65k OBO.

Reads the ad: “This beauty has been featured in several magazines and won numerous Best of Show Awards including the top honors at the 1996 Goodguys Custom d’Elegance Awards at the All-American Get-Together, plus it took awards for Best Custom, Best Paint and Best Interior at the Oakland Roadster Show.”

Continued from the ad: “The car was created by renowned California custom car designer Richard Zocchi back in the mid-1990’s. Over the years Richard has won numerous prestigious awards at all the major West Coast car shows and in recognition for his excellence in creativity, design and workmanship, he has been inducted into six different halls of fame. The award winning Art Himsl painted the car for Richard in a two-tone Tiffany Turquoise and aqua pearl paint with white pearl inset. Art (The Gun Master) is an inductee of the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame and The National Rod & Custom Hall of Fame plus several other automotive halls of fame.”

The interior is spectacular, and largely custom apart from the dash and instruments which were pretty much perfect from the factory anyway.

Says the seller: “Most of the interior has been customized to blend perfectly with the modified exterior except the dash, instrument panel and steering wheel. There is too much to list for the interior but we wanted to point out that the overhead console is accented with stainless and the quarter panel trim teeth from a 1953-54 Mercury.”

Power comes from a standard 331 hemi mated to a factory push-button TorqueFlite automatic, and ride is controlled by air shocks in the rear and airbags in front. Note the A/C compressor. The seller says it runs and drives very well, and promises that it looks just as good in person as in photos.

Richard Zocchi's Custom Cars

Richard Zocchi was a Northern California native who radically customized all makes of cars since the age of 16. His gorgeous eye-catching creations have won countless prestigious awards at all the major
West Coast car shows based on excellence in design, workmanship and paint.

In the mid 70s, when custom car creations were virtually at a standstill, Richard’s awesome “Cool 50” Mercury was one of the primary vehicles that inspired the resurgence of customizing 50s cars that continues to this day!

Rich passed away October 20, 2016 but his original designed customs will continue his legacy. His gorgeous creations graced countless magazine covers and his passion for this “sport” continued throughout his entire life. This website showcases a few of his most stunning creations. All of these cars have new owners except for the 39 Dodge, 56 Lincoln Continental Mark II and Cool 50 Mercury, which are owned by Cherie Zocchi and currently are not for sale.

1959 Plymouth Fury Custom Two-Door Hardtop

1959 Plymouth Fury Custom Two-Door Hardtop

Barris Motor Car Collection|14 May 2005, 10:00 PDT|California, San Francisco

Right out of the factory, Plymouth’s 1959 Fury was radical. Those Virgil Exner fins just reached for the sky and that’s before famed California custom car builder Richard Zocchi got his hands on this original 45,000 mile Fury. About the only thing that hasn’t changed is the stock 318 cubic inch V-8 and Torqueflite automatic transmission.

First, the top was chopped two inches by John Aiello of Marco’s Lucky 7 Customs of Antioch, California. The rear window was retained by insetting it into the back cowl section. Extensively modified, the nose was fitted with a 1957 Buick grill surrounded by a 1957 Chevy bumper widened by four inches, while the Frenched headlights are from a 1960 Buick. The hood’s corners were rounded and it was extended down to meet the grill and fitted with a hood scoop.
All the lower body work modifications were performed by Frank DeRosa & Son of Pittsburg, California. The four wheel well openings were reworked and flared, as were the lower rocker panels. Door and trunk handles were removed and replaced with Unkl Al’s remote entry system. Rear bumper and lower panels were fabricated from 1960 Buick parts. The rear bar taillights started out from a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker, but were stretched six inches and the lenses were made up from a 1950 Ford. Those fabulous rear fins were extended and lengthened all the way to the front doors.

Beautifully sprayed by the legendary Art Himsl of Concord, California, the custom-mixed chartreuse and off-white paint features some red pearl on top and a light twinkle of glitter. The side-spear was painted to resemble the trim on a 1957 DeSoto.

Bill and Tom Fraser of Antioch Muffler fitted the front AMC disc brakes on drop spindles. Out back, Greg Westbury of Concord installed the air bag suspension by air Ride Technology. Wheels are 15-inch chrome Colorado Custom Segundos mounted with 195 R-75 X 15 Diamondback Classic radials. Meanwhile, the glorious pain is set off by chrome and stainless trim prepared by Sherm’s Custom Plating in Sacramento.

Starting with white vinyl and chartreuse piping, the entire interior, including the bucket seats, trunk and hand-made headliner, console and rear seats were constructed and upholstered by Bob Divine of Martinez, California. Sound come courtesy of a Pioneer stereo cassette system.

This fabulous Fury debuted at the Grand National Roadster Show in San Mateo, and at the Sacramento Autorama it was awarded the Sam Barris Memorial Award for Excellence in Paint and Body Work. At the Good Guys in Pleasanton, it made the Top 5 Picks; at the Oakland Rod & Custom Show it garnered “Best Paint,” and at Paso Robles it won “Best Interior.” Now’s your chance to make this Fury the best car in your garage.
